Widen your phylacteries?
Mar 18, 2025I know you’re all eager to widen your phylacteries, right?
But I felt compelled to share this thought from today’s readings.
Today’s readings are:

(Focusing on Matthew 23:1-12)
Jesus warns against the hypocrisy of religious leaders but encourages us to listen to those given authority by God (i.e., “the chair of Moses,” Mt. 23:2).
Then He seems to call out religious leaders who wear phylacteries.
(A phylactery is a small leather box containing Hebrew texts, worn by Jewish men—on both their foreheads and arms—as a reminder to keep the law, based on Deuteronomy 6:8.)
So it seems the “scribes and Pharisees” (the people He’s addressing in Mt. 23:1) wore phylacteries.
Yet Jesus encourages His listeners to obey them (“do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,” v. 3).
So, should we be surprised to find evidence on the Shroud of Turin that Jesus may have worn phylacteries?
