Seven ways we know Mary is our Mother (from Scripture)
Mar 30, 2025Mary is truly my Mother and truly your Mother. There are at least seven ways to show you that Mary is truly your Mother.
#1- “Mother of all the living” (Gen. 3:20 and Rev. 21:5)
Eve is called the “Mother of all the living.” (Genesis 3:20)
And if something is true in the Old Testament, how much MORE must it be true in the New Testament? After all, Jesus makes all things new (Rev. 21:5).
And if Eve became the mother of all the living, by bringing death to the world through disobedience, how much more did Mary become the Mother of all the living by bringing Christ into the world through her obedience?
#2- “Son, behold your Mother.” (Jn. 19: 26-27)
At the foot of the cross, Jesus looked to Mary and entrusted the beloved disciple to her care.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your Son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your Mother.’ And from that hour, the disciple took her into his home.
Jn. 19: 26-27
Who is “the disciple whom he loved” if it’s not you and me?
#3- “those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus” (Rev. 12:17)
Who keeps the commandments of God and bears witness to Jesus? Do you?
In the book of Revelation, John says that he could see a Woman Clothed with the Sun in heaven. This is clearly Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
But look a little further, and you’ll see that Michael the Archangel battled against the dragon. And the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to “wage war against her offspring.” (Rev 12:17)
Who are her offspring? John tells us that her offspring are those who “keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus.” (Rev 12:17)
#4- “Christ lives in me” (Gal. 2:20)
St. Paul said, “I live, but it is no longer I that live, but Christ who lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20) This is how we should view things when we consider Jn. 14:23: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” If Christ lives in you, how can Mary neglect to love you with Motherly care?
You can't claim Jesus as a brother without invoking Mary as Mother.
#5- “fellow heirs with Christ” (Rom. 8:16-17)
St. Paul tells us that the Spirit bears witness to the fact that we are children of God. (Romans 8:16-17) And because of that, we are “fellow heirs” with Christ. How can we be “fellow heirs” with Christ if we are not also sons of Mary?
#6- “we must be born again” (John 3:3)
Jesus says “no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above” or “born again.” (John 3:3) Being born is a passive verb. It means someone bore us. So if we need to be “born again,” that raises the question: by whom will we be born again?
It just makes sense that we must be born again through Mary.
#7- “Mother of the Church” (Lk. 1:35 and Acts 2)
Jesus was conceived when the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary in Luke 1:35. Then the Church is formed at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit overshadows Mary and the Apostles in Acts 2. Since St. Luke wrote both passages, he clearly intended to convey the reality that Mary is the Mother of the Church.
And if you are part of the Church established by Jesus, then Mary is your Mother!
